Curtis Matzke is an independent filmmaker from central Michigan and founder of the media production company, Unfurnished Films. Focusing on directing and writing, he aims to contribute to the film arts through both the creative and technical processes.
Curtis’s work has screened at various venues nationally and internationally His first feature-length fiction film, COMPLEX, was recognized with several awards, including Best Narrative Feature at the Made-in-Michigan Film Festival. A short fantasy film (SPLINTER), which he wrote and directed, is currently screening at festivals and earned a nomination at the Reno-Tahoe International Film Festival. Another short film he directed, A WAKE, has also screened was recently part of the 2017 Cannes Short Film Corner. His full-length documentary (FIRST FEATURE) is in post-production. A new fiction feature film (SPINE), which he wrote and plans to direct, is under development. The script was a semifinalist in the 2016 Screencraft Scifi Feature competition and advanced to the second round in the 2017 Austin Film Festival.
Curtis currently works as a freelance film editor and camera operator in Chicago, Illinois, contributing individually and as part of a team on a variety of fiction, nonfiction, and commercial film and video projects. Curtis enjoys connections with some great Chicago institutions, including The Second City, Columbia College, and the Midwest Independent Film Festival. He is a member of Sundance Institute, IFP Chicago, and the Music Box Theatre. He was named as an Outstanding Lansing Filmmaker in 2011.
Curtis has a B.A. and an M.A. in Media Arts and Technology from Michigan State University with a concentration in Television, Cinema, and Radio, a minor in Film Studies, and a Specialization in Design.
